spinning stars - the quilt along

spinning stars - let's do a quilt along!

I'm so excited that there are others out there that want to join in with the spinning stars quilt along. I've set up a flickr group for us, so if you head over there and join you can start posting photos of fabrics and we can start chatting and helping each other out.

A few people have mentioned the possibility of foundation piecing the blocks - so if there's someone out there that fancies giving that a whirl and drafting up a block that way, let me know - I think that'd be a huge help for those that are scared of templates.

There are some amazing examples of spinning star quilts out there. Just look at these....

Spinning Stars
(Esther's quilt)

Spinning Stars Quilt
(Meredith's)

Spinning Stars Quilt in Little Folks
(Another by Meredith using voiles - how soft would this be?!)

My friend Brenda from Pink Castle Fabrics is sponsoring the quilt along and has offered up some fantastic kick off prizes as well as a dedicated coupon code for all of you that want to go shopping.

Your coupon code is SPIN15 for 15% off all purchases!!!! (it's good for the duration of the quilt along, ok?)

There are 2 fat eighth packs of each of these bundles for 2 lucky winners. One pack of cool, and one pack of warm fabrics for each winner. Simply leave a comment on this post for your chance to win. For an additional chance, sign up to the flickr group and then come back and leave a comment saying you have (giveaway will close in one week).

So, go join the flickr group, download the free pattern, take yourself shopping, and let's get going!

The official start date is going to be Wednesday September 12th, because that's my wedding anniversary.

This bundle looks gorgeous, very quiltspirational! :) Happy Anniversary...

Sarah said...

I was considering giving the pattern a go on my own, but so much more excited to do it as a QAL! :) Will make sure to follow the Flickr group later.

Jess said...

Oh so tempting. I suck at QALs thought - swoon and hopscotch are still wips...

Lindsey said...

Meh! Why did I decide to update my blog today? Why did I see your QAL at the top of my feed? Now I HAVE to sign up! Wanted to do something for me for the longest time and I'm totally loving this pattern. Templates downloaded? Check. Comment left on Katy's blog? Check. Flickr group joined? Next on list then it's fabric choosing time. See you on the other side.

amy dame said...

thanks for the awesome examples! i really want to do this, but i think i'll pull from my stash. i went a little overboard with labour day sales, so no more buying fabric for awhile!

love Merediths, be interested if anyone did a foundation pattern, bit too much on to join QAL

Gunilla said...

Hmmm, already thinking what fabric to use... Text fabrics maybe? Love the design and great giveaway!!!

Laura C said...

I think I am ready to join my first QAL! One of my goals for the next year is to be more social with my crafting, AND, conveniently, you've chosen a pattern on my to-make list. I see a fabric or two in that cool pile that might suit my imagined color scheme... :)

Hannah Roche said...

Ooh, how exciting! I am fairly new to sewing but have well and truly got the bug and would love to build up my stash with a warm or cool pack. I have a list of projects longer than my arm...

Thank you!

Aaand I just joined the Flickr group--heh, just joined Flickr!--so count me in.

You are such a temptress!! I have half a hexagon flower quilt literally laying on my living room floor. I have 2.5-inch squares floating all over the house and the cutting/ironing boards always set up at the ready to make more "vomit". This quilt is also gorgeous, though, and I might be able to find time... I will certainly be watching for inspiration!

mtnquiltr said...

I love this pattern, so maybe I'll commit to the quilt along. Now for the fun fabric picks!

two hippos said...

so want to join, must speed up the sewing of my hexy mf!

Kasey said...

AMH is an evil temptress. As are you. I saw your original post and thought, "I can make one block. Just one. But I'm not going to buy a pattern for just one block. Good Kasey, resisting temptation." But now I see the pattern is free???? Eegads, I guess I'll make just one block. Or two, while I procrastinate finishing other projects. Or three, so it's another totally awkward dabble.
So, next time my husband asks what I'm working on, I'll tell him it's AMH's fault, and a wee bit yours, too. THANKS!!!! :D

Colleen said...

I wish I had time! If I get my two wedding quilts done I may start a little late!

freakadoodles said...

That voile version is amazing! I won't be participating in this one, but I'll be following along. Can't wait to see everyone's spinning stars!

Laura said...

These are gorgeous! Maybe I'll take a stab at it.

Happy Anniversary!! Beautiful fabrics and quilts to inspire will be giving the spinning stars a whirl!!

Nanette said...

I'm totally in for this one, though I'll be pulling fabrics from my stash. My credit cards need a rest!

It seems like it shouldn't be that difficult to draft up a paper piecing version of the block. I might take a crack at it, even though I have never ever drafted a block OR foundation paper pieced in my life. I have been wanting to try both; why not now?

Nanette said...

Oh, and I joined the Flickr group. I'm looking forward to the 12th. (And happy anniversary!)

Kathryn said...

Those certainly are inspiring examples of the patterns. I'd love to win some fabric and try it out. Thanks.

The gray one is my favourite, but I like the way there is a 'seam' running through the voile one. That's a clever idea to steal for other projects.

Ooh love the hot pink one by Meredith. Thanks for the giveaway.

I also joined the group. I am not sure yet if I will QAL but I can't wait to see what everyone else does.

Well, I finally have my swoon and granny square tops done, so I may as well join you on this adventure too. I have an overflowing bucket of solids scraps, so I think I'll do a lap, in all solids!

Congratulation on your wedding anniversary! I love the idea of this quilt along, but don't have much time for it. If I won some fabric I had to do it, of course... ;-)

Ralitza said...

Very interesting quilt! So different in different colours!

Julierose said...

It's interesting that you mention some people having the "heebie-jeebies" when trying (and I use that word advisedly!) to use templates. Somehow I have never been successful with them. I don't know why, but they really make me nervous...just saying--I have a small drawer FULL of them--perhaps a tute on how to cut precisely with them and not having your template or rotary cutter slip and miss? Julierose

Patchysails said...

They are gorgeous , however I have too many projects on the way, I feel confusion If I leave them for another ..LOL Quilt On

Tiffany said...

I'm still hesitant to start this - but I love the example quilts! I think grey would be the perfect addition to the fabrics I have on hand to make this... :D Unless I win, of course ;)

Tiffany said...

I joined the flickr group - will be interested to see people's quilts coming together.

Marci Girl said...

I wish I could join along, but alas I have one to many projects going on right now, but I can't wait to see what all the lovely quilts will look like!

blondie19012k said...

Oh these quilts are amazing! I'm wondering what sort of 'level' this would be? I'm a total beginner, so not sure if it would be too much for me as a first quilt!
