I spent the day, from around 11.30am to 2.30pm making blocks (I'm strip piecing for speed) and had 12 by the time it was school pick up hour.

12. That's pretty good going, I think.

I was thinking of keeping them all in these darker colours - reds and blues, but I'm worried it might look a bit 4th July, so I'll try adding in some pastels and see how that goes. Worse case scenario I have to make 2 quilts - one with the pastels, one with the red, white and blue. I hoard 30s repros, something about them makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside, they really are such perfect ditsy prints, and the colours have that great timeless feel to them. I also have a whole heap of the (first lot of) Denyse Schmidt for Joanns fabrics that would co-ordinate really nicely if I were to make this quilt all red, white and blue.
Hmm.
Decisions, decisions. What to do?
I'd better go make some more granny squares, just to help me decide.
don't forget the 2 giveaways I have going on this week - click thru here and here

I think you should keep to bold primary colors. The pastels might look too washed out against them. Love the idea of strip piecing though!
Like I said on Instagram, I kind of like them like this. But then again I LOVE 30s fabric all mingling together so who knows. I think either way you can't lose because the fabric's lovely. Not helping, am I?
I think you should make more granny squares obviously!
I like these bold colours but I do agree it might look a bit too 4th of July on a whole quilt. Some pastels should fix that, a little pink would help too.
hehe, sounds like a good plan! why stop at one quilt when you can make two? ;-) I think the Denyse Schmidt fabrics would look great mixed in with the ones here, since they also have that retro feel to them. And I think because there's the yellow it doesn't look too 4th of July!
Maybe you could add some (non pastel) green blocks? Or even...brown? Love 30's repro fabrics too, I have heaps of them in my stash, waiting for that 'special' project to use them...
looking good so far. i'm interested to know more about this strip piecing method as it seems to speed the process up quite a bit! i feel the same way about 30s prints :D
I like the idea of adding some (dark-ish) green blocks
Hmmmm...with that black and yellow in there 4th of July was the last thing I would have thought of had you not mentioned it. I think it looks wonderful and I agree...stripe piecing is the way to do it if you are using a certain collection and have yardage!:)
I have a stack of actual 30s prints that a friend gave me. They belonged to her grandmother. I just can't cut into them right now!:)
The granny train took over my house. I wanted to do them in random color groups yet I only had a few colors so by the time I had finished my 40 blocks (making 2 lap quilts) I had to buy a pile of material which is great as a new quilter I finally have a stash to make other projects.

I love the yellow POP in the middle!!
I think I'd want to hijack 4th of July and make it a 2nd of June Jubilee quilt top, thank you very much!
I love these. Stick with the darks; if you don't want to be 4th of July, throw in a set of dark greens.
I can't believe you finished 12 blocks in the same time it took me to finish 6! Strip piecing rocks.
They look fabulous! Wow, you are speedy! I would either throw in some green like Jan suggested, or maybe some yellow with blue/red centers.
Your blocks look great, and I didn't think "patriotic". Maybe with a border that doesn't say "4th of July" to you?
Your granny blocks look great! Love the pairing of red and blue... happy sewing!
Very pretty! More would definitely be good! :) I need to make more too! Very addictive!
Lol I need to stop reading your blog Katie, I am always tempted by what you've got going on. I have a whole container of 30's and half a container of feed sacks and this might become the plan, they are so cute.
I love these, but then I'm such a sucker for 30s prints. Maybe add some more yellows and some of that funky 30s nile green?
No no no pastels methinks! How about adding greens, purples, turquoise, oranges...all or just one?
Love it in R, W, + B.
12 is great!! I agree about the 30s repro :)
I also agree with Hadley, jubilee, hahaha!
Was it hard to figure out the strip piecing? I've got a jelly roll on its way to my house for this quilt-along, so I'll be joining on strip piecing soon!
They look fabulous and I can't wait to see what other colours you choose!
